What makes these classes different from a standard yoga class?

The series of back care classes have been designed by medical practitioners and specialists, including GPs and physiotherapists, and are being delivered by a fully qualified and experienced teacher who has specially trained and completed a Back care postgraduate course.

What equipment do I need to bring?

A yoga mat (unless provided at the venue) a blanket for relaxation, and a drink of water (can be warm) are recommended. You are also encouraged to bring a cushion for support during relaxation and to help lower back by placing under knees for some postures/exercises.

What should I wear?

Loose-fitting, comfortable clothing with layers for the cold and for relaxation, and non-slip socks if feet get cold. Avoid big meals before a class.

What should I expect in a Dru Back Care Yoga class?

The same as in a standard Dru yoga class, only specially adapted to back pain and with extra safety in mind. The class typically includes the following elements gentle warmup, modified EBR sequence, posture work, breathing techniques, and a guided relaxation modified especially for back issues.

Are these classes suitable for everyone?

Safety is paramount in Dru yoga and especially in the back care classes. These are aimed at people suffering from certain types of non-specific back pain and some conditions will be ineligible for the class. A questionnaire will be used before to confirm it is safe to attend and some conditions will require the assent of a physician before attendance.

What will be included in the series package?

Handouts with exercises to do at home will specifically be included in this package so progress can be made and pursued on a longer-term basis, even when the series has ended, and for reference when needed in the future.

What techniques are used to promote wellbeing?

Flowing movements with breathwork, stretching, relaxation and meditation.

What benefits do they offer?

The relief of these types of back pain that will be targeted in these classes. Dru yoga also generally brings improved strength and flexibility, increased core stability, and a holistic approach to wellbeing. It is very much a therapeutic, nurturing and restorative form of yoga. It can improve digestion, relieve anxiety and stress and improve sleeping patterns.
